1996 AFL Centenary: The Postmarks

Victorian AFL Clubs

All the Victorian AFL Clubs’ postmarks were of a herald shield with the clubs name, local Post Office and the clubs’ logo. The relevant post office shows changes in Melbourne’s geography and the club’s home ground.

Collingwood had two postmarks one held at Abbotsford and the other at the philatelic bureau. The date stamp for the Philatelic Bureau Postmark was enclosed in a rectangle. (APM29076) Collingwood was the only Victorian Club to have a pre-existing postmark. It was issued on the 11 March 1992 as part of the Clubs Centenary Celebrations. As the withdrawal of the postmark had not been announced Australia Post issued a last day of use postmark on the AFL Centenary Cover.

The Fitzroy Lions merged with the Brisbane Bears 0n the 4 July 1996. The Brisbane Lions were officially launched on 1 November 1996 and joined the national competition in 1997. Australia Post announced the withdrawal of the postmark on the 2 January 1997. For unknown reasons they again announced the withdrawal of the postmark on the 6 June 2003.

Footscray announced a name change to the Western Bulldogs to further represent the “mighty West”. It was withdrawn on Easter Thursday 27 March 1997 and the new postmark issued on Tuesday 1 April 1997.
