2019 was special as the newest expansion Club, Greater Western Sydney Giants, made the Grand Final for the first time only eight years since their birth. Their opponent was the Richmond Tigers who won the Flag in 2017.
Unfortunately it was a one sided affair with the Tigers winning by 89 points in front of 100,014 spectators. Richmond’s Dustin Martin won the Norm Smith Medal as the player judged best on ground.
Richmond stunned the Football World with the inclusion of Marlion Pickett, a 27 year old indigenous player from Perth, for his first AFL game. He became the first Grand Final debutant since Keith Batchelor for Collingwood in 1952. The previous week he had been best on ground in Richmond’s VFL Grand Final Win.
The final scores were Richmond 17.12 (114) to GWS 3.7 (25).
Australia Post celebrated the Richmond Tigers resounding victory with a 2019 AFL Premiers postal numismatic cover.
It features a pictorial envelope with the Australian Map stamp and a coin from the Royal Australian Mint, the F one dollar from the Great Aussie Coin Hunt. The stamp is postmarked 4 November 2019, Richmond Vic 3121 with the seasonal postmark. It is limited to just 2,019.
