2002-05 Preseason: Wizard Cup

The AFL preseason competition was called the Wizard Home Loans Cup from 2002 to 2005. It was run as a round robin competition from 2000. It was a place to try innovations such as the super goal were a goal kicked from outside 50m was worth 9 points. Another in 2003 was that a deliberate rushed behind was worth 3 points.

The preseason Wizard home Loans Cup, for the third year, was run as a round robin competition rather than a Knockout Competition. The two finalist were the 2001 winner, Port Power, and the Richmond Tigers who hand not won a preseason Grand final since 1962. The  grand final was played  at Colonial Stadium on the 16th March 2002. On the night the Power was much too good and defeated the Tigers by a flattering 9 points. The score was 10.11 (71) to 9.8 (62). The Michael Tuck Medallist was won by Nick Stevens from Port Adelaide.

Carlton won by 25 points. As often is the case it served as little guide to the season. Carlton won the wooden spoon and their opponents the Eagles made the Grand Final.
