On the 21st January 1998 Australia Post issued a set of twelve stamps honouring Australian Olympians. Two stamps were issued for each athlete with one showing a portrait and the other showing the athlete in action.
The athletes were Betty Cuthbert, Herb Elliott, Dawn Fraser,Marjorie Jackson,Murray Rose and Shirley Strickland. Two of the athletes, Betty Cuthbert and Shirley Strickland won Gold Medals at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
Gummed Sheetlet Stamps
Australia Post produced two covers for the sheetlet stamps with the team entering the MCG arena as the cachet.
A WCS and private FDC of the sheetlet was also produced.
Se-tenant stamps of the individual athletes were also produced by Australia Post with a cachet of the athlete.

First Class Collectables (Alpha Covers) produced two sets of six covers. The covers for Cuthbert and Strickland are shown below,
The International Olympic Commission (IOC) also issued a set of six covers. They have a very extensive stamp collection and a stamp expo is usually associated with the Games.
Australia Post usually produces a set of maxicards and this issue was not an exception.
