1990: Melbourne bid for the 1996 Olympics

Melbourne made a bid for the 1996 Olympics and on the 22 June 1990 Australia Post issued a set of  3 postcards showing the proposed venues. Naturally this included the MCG, along with the National Tennis Centre and the Royal Exhibition Building. The postcards were mint and postmarked with “Olympics For Melbourne 1996” PM. They were re-released on the 18th September 1990 with “Games Logo” PM and catchet.

Also released on the 18 September was a Fran Geerling Hand painted cover by Limited Edition Covers in a run of 96. This is shown in the banner. Frans and Linda have been creating First Day Covers since 1984. The cover contained an insert of the final Voting and the Olympics were awarded to Atlanta over Athens.
